“Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, ‘We should by all means go up and take possession of it, for we will surely overcome it.’” Numbers 13:30 The Lord told Moses to send a man from each of the 12 tribes of Israel to spy out the land of Canaan. Moses then sent 12 men to spy out the land of Canaan and the men returned 40 days later and 10 of the 12 spies gave a unified report. The 10 spies reported to Israel that the land flowed with milk and honey but the cities and its inhabitants were too strong for them because Anak’s descendants, who were giants, possessed the land. The two remaining spies, Joshua and Caleb, also reported that the land flowed with milk and honey, but they had a different perspective. Caleb reported that they should take possession of the land and they would overcome it. We see two different perspectives from a group of 12 men who journeyed to the same land and who also surveyed the same land. Yet, 10 of the 12 gave a different report. The 10 believed the circumstance and situation was insurmountable and impossible but the two believed they were well able because the God of Israel would be with them to possess the land that He had promised. Among the 10 spies, Joshua and Caleb proved to be godly leaders and proclaimers of truth. Joshua and Caleb boldly spoke what they knew to be true, which was what God spoke. In the presence of Moses, Caleb was able to quiet the people and fearlessly speak what the Lord promised regardless of how the people might respond.
In the midst of chaos and though you may be outnumbered by a crowd that opposes the truth of God's word, are you able to, like Joshua and Caleb, continue to believe God and boldly proclaim what you know to be true? The people must have thought Caleb and Joshua were not to be trusted because the other 10 spies spoke of giants and of great defeat. As you reflect upon Joshua and Caleb's boldness and faith, choose today, to trust in your faithful God and His promises even though situations, circumstances, and obstacles seem insurmountable and impossible. He will be with you as you endure trials and hardships. He promised to never leave you nor forsake you. God's word is true. Stand for truth. Proclaim His truth. Proclaim His faithfulness. With the help and strength of the Lord, you are well able.
