“But you who held fast to the Lord your God are alive today, every one of you.” Deuteronomy 4:4 Of those that remained among the children of Israel, were those who held fast to the Lord. They saw their fellow Israelites die in their sin and Moses was now warning them to continue to hold fast to the Lord. Moses made it clear that they were alive because of their obedience to the Lord and if they were to continue to experience life, they were to hold fast to the Lord. To hold fast is to cling to and to remain close to someone or something. The Israelites who were alive did not turn away from God, as the other Israelites did, but they remained faithful. They believed God and therefore they obeyed God. They clung to the Lord and lived. They understood that obedience to the Lord resulted in life and that to turn from the Lord in disobedience, brought about death. There are many choices in life and you alone decide who and what you will hold fast to. Whoever and whatever you hold fast to has your complete loyalty and devotion and because of this, you will refuse to let go and you will cling to what you are loyal to. As believers, we should hold fast to the Lord, be completely loyal, completely devoted, and refuse to turn away from Him. We should cling to Him and His Word for He alone gives us life, in this life, and in the life to come. Persevere in all things and continue to hold fast to the Lord.
