"Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, My lips will praise You." Psalm 63:3 While in the wilderness of Judah, David wrote Psalm 63. When you think of the wilderness, you think of a dry, desolate, and mostly uninhabited place. It is in the wilderness that resources, such as: food, water, and shelter are scarce. A person stranded in the wilderness would search diligently to find these resources in order to survive. As David was in the wilderness he thought of the barrenness of his surroundings and particularly the lack of water. No doubt while in in the wilderness the intensity of the heat magnified his thirst and he considered what it would be like to long for the Lord as though his very life depended on it. David boldly and confidently proclaimed that God was His God and that he would earnestly seek Him. This meant that David desired the Lord so much that he sought the Lord with everything within him; just as a man would seek for water in a place where there is no water, in order to survive. David went on to say that he’d seen the Lord’s power and glory in the sanctuary. David could say this because he had a relationship with the Lord and he personally knew about the Lord’s strength and presence in his life. David knew that the Lord’s lovingkindness was better than life and therefore, in a dry and barren land, he could praise the Lord. The Lord’s unfailing and unending love is unlike any love that we have known or will ever know and His presence is worth seeking.
Like David, purpose to praise God on today because His love is incomparable and better than anything we can experience in life. Seek Him as though your life depended upon it. Desire Him more than anyone or anything in life. Your surroundings and circumstances may be as dry, weary, barren, and desolate as the wilderness, but remember the Lord’s power and strength, which is shown in His unfailing and never-ending love. Meditate upon His lovingkindness and trust that your soul will be satisfied; for the love of God is better than life itself.
