His Fame Spread

“So the Lord was with Joshua, and his fame spread throughout all the country.” Joshua 6:2

The Lord promised to be with Joshua, and Joshua knew that to be true because God repeatedly had shown His faithfulness as Moses led the children of Israel. The nearness of God grew more evident and much more personal to Joshua as he was commissioned to leadership, faced various difficulties, and possessed the city of Jericho.

The Lord’s greatness was known from His faithfulness to care for, provide, and protect the children of Israel. Throughout the country, people observed when the Lord delivered the Israelites from Egypt and as they faced every adversary. It was now also known that the Lord was with Joshua, just as he was with Moses, and Joshua’s fame spread throughout the country

​Fame can come in many ways, and it accompanies reputation, which can be favorable or unfavorable. Either way, it can spread quickly and precede a person, so that others immediately identify or associate the person with their reputation, and their reputation is what comes to mind when the person is spoken of or seen. Joshua didn’t seek fame for himself; God exalted Joshua, and because of this, others knew that the Lord was with Joshua.

As you consider this passage, think of how the Lord promises to be with us. The very thought that the Lord’s presence is with His children should cause our reputation to precede us. We may not receive the type or extent of fame as Joshua; however, others will know and speak of how the Lord cares for, provides, and protects us. Because of the Lord’s presence in our lives, the Lord’s fame should spread throughout the country as we abide in His presence, speak of His holiness, goodness, faithfulness, and share the gospel with others. Make it your ambition to spread the good news of the Gospel, so that the Lord’s fame will spread.
