“All the people perceived the thunder and the lightning flashes and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood at a distance.” Exodus 20:18
When we see lightning and we hear thunder, are they only to be associated with rain and thunderstorms? "Then God spoke all these words, saying, “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. “You shall have no other gods before Me." Exodus 20:1-3
After the Israelites consecrated themselves to be ready for visitation from the Lord, Moses spoke to them to ensure that they would keep the boundaries the Lord commanded by only standing at the foot of Mount Sinai. They were not to attempt to come upon the mountain or they would perish. By God’s command, only Moses and Aaron were allowed to come up the mountain. When Moses returned to the mountain the Lord spoke, from His heart, the Ten Commandments. “…and let them be ready for the third day, for on the third day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people.” Exodus 19:10-11
Our minds are bombarded with hundreds of things everyday. We are pulled in so many directions that when we attempt to give attention to one specific thing, our focus can be limited and filled with distractions. Sometimes we take these distractions into our worship time, Bible study, and prayer lives. Our minds toggle between each distraction and we don’t prepare ourselves to meet with God. "‘Now then, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be My own possession among all the peoples, for all the earth is Mine; and you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the sons of Israel.” Exodus 19:5-6
“You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings, and brought you to Myself.” Exodus 19:4
"Moses’ father-in-law said to him, 'The thing that you are doing is not good. You will surely wear out, both yourself and these people who are with you, for the task is too heavy for you; you cannot do it alone.'" Exodus 18:17-18
Everyone has responsibilities, some more than others. Sometimes, without thinking much about it, the tendency is to do it all yourself by yourself. If we aren’t careful, we can over exhaust ourselves and this can also affect those around us as well. “But Moses’ hands were heavy. Then they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other. Thus his hands were steady until the sun set.” Exodus 17:8-13
Weary in the battle? How do you sustain your strength until the victory has been won? “Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness and found no water. When they came to Marah, they could not drink the waters of Marah, because they were bitter; for that reason it was named Marah. So the people grumbled at Moses, saying, ‘What are we to drink?’ Then he cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a tree; and he threw it into the waters, and the waters became sweet.” Exodus 15:22-25
It's easy to be tempted to forget what the Lord has brought you from when you experience a difficult trial shortly after a great victory. So how do you face your new battle? Then Moses and the sons of Israel sang this song to the Lord…Exodus 15:1-21
