"This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success."
Joshua 1:8 (NKJV)

Delight in the Lord

"Blessed is the man
Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,
    Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
He shall be like a tree
Planted by the rivers of water,
That brings forth its fruit in its season,
    Whose leaf also shall not wither;
And whatever he does shall prosper."
Psalm 1:1-3 (NKJV)

Inductive Bible Study

First let's...

Observe
Picture
To begin our study of the Scriptures, we must first pray for understanding of the Scripture and that our hearts are softened to receive the Word of God.  Then we must look at the text and ask ourselves:

  • Who?
  • What?
  • When?
  • Where?

Asking these questions will help in carefully observing what is in the text so that we can interpret the text within its context.  Consistently asking ourselves, "What do I see?" will help in preparation for interpretation and application.

Then let's...

Interpret
Picture
After carefully observing the Scriptures, we must interpret the text by asking ourselves (What, How, and Why?):
  • What does this passage reveal about God and about man?
  • What is the meaning of  the passage within the proper context?
  • How does the passage's meaning relate to the other Scriptures surrounding the text?
  • Is the interpretation true to the character of God?
Scripture has only one interpretation but many applications.  Interpretation of the Scripture must align with who God represents Himself to be consistently throughout the Scriptures.

Now let's...

Apply
Picture
The application of the Scriptures is vital so that we are doers of the Word, but application cannot precede observation and interpretation. As we seek to be doers of the Word, we must ask ourselves:
  • From what I've just learned, how can these passages be applied to my life?
  • How am I to change my thinking so that my thoughts and actions align with Scripture?
The questions above and the questions mentioned in the observation and interpretation are by no means exhaustive; however, they can result in meditation and application of the Scripture.
